Pampas

I have a large, old pampas grass that is ready for a new home.  Let me know if you would like it.  It would require some digging.

Thetis Community Day - Thank You

Sincere thank you's to all the participating groups and to everyone who attended Thetis Community Day on Saturday.

Rooms full of activity, folks re-connecting and meeting anew, with conversations and sharing of valuable island information, made the day a great success. Representatives were on hand from more than 30 island organizations and groups reflecting the myriad activities and programs offered on the island: from yoga and Tai chi to the volunteer fire department to government agencies to our new paramedic services and so much more. For newcomers to Thetis, it was an eye-opener just how energetic this community is and the wide range of opportunities for participation and volunteerism. For longer-term islanders, the event reminded us of the enrichment these various organizations and their volunteers bring to our lives on Thetis.

With over 90 lunches served and the beverage and treats counter busy all day, it was great to see so many islanders enjoying themselves. Thank you to the Food Services volunteers!

Thanks to all who contributed door prizes, the winners were congratulated with happy cheers.

A seed of an idea blossomed into a beneficial and welcoming day for our community.

High Fire Hazard Rating

The Fire Hazard Rating for our area (BC Wildfire Service) has moved up to HIGH HAZARD.

High: Forest fuels are very dry and the fire risk is serious. New fires may start easily, burn vigorously, and challenge fire suppression efforts. Extreme caution must be used in any forest activities. Open burning and industrial activities may be restricted.

Campfires with permits must be attended while ignited and extinguished thoroughly until cold to touch.  Now would be a good time to get out your propane campfire appliance for the summer.

Thanks: Fawn Help

Big thanks to Jerry & his 2 boys who are one of our neighbours that stopped in to have a look but arrived 2 hours early & didn't see the fawn. The great people & kind souls who found Bambi & set her free were our neighbour Roberto & his son Dominik, Carolyn thanks for showing up for the search, Margaret one of the new islanders who help spend 90 minutes after the first wrangling attempt failed & our 2 cousins who were so great being the first ones to see Bambi & helping to remove her back to the wild & her momma.

We couldn't have done it without you. Thanks everyone.

If you didn't stay for a drink, please return when you have the time for a beer or glass of wine or both.

ThINC - Opening Week of the Nature House!

Our first event of the summer is this Saturday, July 2 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm! Come explore the Nature House, nearby shoreline, and the Garry Oak meadow. We will get to know the new sea creatures in the seaquarium, see what's on the shore, have a break for tea and treats, then explore the uniqueness of the meadow!

On Sunday, July 3 we will have our first Family Nature Afternoon. From 2:00 - 4:00 pm we invite you to spend time at the Nature House! This week we will play games that teach about the food web, craft cards with dried flowers, and investigate the Seaquarium!

Both events take place at the Nature House located at The Portal, 254 North Cove Road. Please park at Fairyslipper Forest parking area or at the Heneage House, the first red building you'll meet on the driveway and walk down to the Nature House, there will be lots of signage!

We also have lovely sheep neighbours around The Portal, please do not feed them anything and do not touch the electric fence, the shock is not a fun zap, but a painful shock! Stay safe!

If you have any questions about this week's events please contact Connelly at connelly@thetisislandnatureconservancy.org

See you soon!

Post Office Closures for Installing New System

The post office will not be offering any services on Wednesday June 29, 2022, because of an installation of new hardware and software.  We will be open on Thursday June 30 and Friday July 1.  We will be closed Saturday July 2 for training and ensuring we have a handle on the new system.  Parcel pick-up and delivery should be back to speed on Tuesday July 5.

On Tuesday 28 the computer will be offline at 3:00 to set up for the transition on Wednesday 29.  You can still drop off mail if it already has postage until 5:00 but I will not be able to process anything that requires postage.

Reference Postal boxes.

The new system for post office boxes is very different from what we are used to now.  This is on my end I have got some leeway from Canada Post to make things work.  This has no affect on what Michelle has put together.  All of that will be inputted into the system and it will have no effect on anyone having an assigned post office box before June 29.  After that every PO box has to go through the new process.
