Plants for the PAG!

Hi everyone!

I am hoping to establish a native medicinal plant section at the People's Apothecary Garden and I was wondering if anyone has any of the following plants and would be willing to share some?! It's a long list and includes: camas, oceanspray, yerba buena, oregon grape, licorice fern, rattlesnake plantain, silverweed, red elderberry, red flowering currant, cooley’s hedge nettle, and bleeding heart.

I'd also like to add more (non-native) medicinals, including: spearmint, chamomile, echinacea, gold seal and wild bergamot. I am also open to other suggestions!

If anyone has any of these plants please email me at linnea@thetisislandnatureconservancy.org

Thank you so much Thetis island community for your endless generosity and kindness!

Seeking Names from Family Fun Day

Greetings Islanders,

There are some good photos of kids enjoying the sac race and water closet at the Family Fun Day last weekend. The photos have been chosen to be included in the upcoming Quarterly, and one potentially as the cover!  However, I need names and parental permission in order to use them and unfortunately I don’t recognize the kids.

Anyone who had family or visitors here whose boy (likely age 8-12) who participated in the coffee sac race, or a girl (likely age 10-14) with braided hair and nike shoes who got soaked in the water closet, please contact me at hunter_studio@hotmail.com

I believe the young boy may be connected with the Vickers family? Hoping to identify these smiling kids so they can be included in the upcoming Quarterly.

Many thanks,
Tricia Hunter

ThINC Nature House: Sun, Aug 14

10:00 am start: Nature Connections with Marcia Aftimus and Ian Ralston at the Nature House (adult)
Explore the five pathways of connectedness: contact, beauty, emotion, meaning, and compassion, to develop a closer relationship with nature. The day will start with an awareness walk through the forest, followed by a meditation and visualization with one of the beautiful Thetis Cards. These cards depict various flora and fauna of Thetis and harness their healing connection through meditation; they were developed by Ian, Marcia, and Regina. After the meditation we will spend time in contact with the plant of the chosen card, and then express what we experienced and felt using air dry clay or sketching, or in other ways, to remind us in our lives how it is to be present in nature. The session will close with open conversation about our experiences. This workshop is limited to 10 participants, please contact connelly@thetisislandnatureconservancy.org to book your spot.

Note: As the forest walk will start at the gate of the Portal, it may be easiest to park at Fairyslipper Forest and then join us at the top of the hill.

2:00 pm start: Family Nature Afternoon - Orienteering at the Nature House (all ages)
Develop your orienteering skills by partaking in a Treasure Hunt around the portal! Young navigators will work with a map and compass and use them to find treasure! For craft, we will colour in the maps and add landmarks and a legend. There will also be time to explore the seaquarium!

You're Invited! Public Town Hall Event - Aug 18 – Mill Bay Community Hall

Alister MacGregor
MP - Cowichan - Malahat- Langford

Join me and representatives from Parks Canada, local first nations, and community stakeholders on Thursday, August 18 6:00pm - 8:00pm for an in-person update on the National Marine Conservation Area (NMCA) and freighter anchorages issue.

A NMCA for the Salish Sea would be monumental in the fight against freighter anchorages, and I am excited to help bring forward new information, directly from Parks Canada, on this project.

I encourage you to attend the live event at the Mill Bay Community Hall (1035 Shawnigan Lake-Mill Bay Rd). For those who can't attend in person, I will also be streaming the event live on my Facebook page.

Two Smart Hubs for Internet Connection

They didn't work well in our location. $200 each. They use the Telus Cell towers so if you have reasonable cell service, otherwise I don't believe there is any point trying them. There is also an antenna available. So for instance if you have one bar of signal strength it may raise that to 2-3 bars for better reception, $150. Email littleislander@protonmail.com. Please use smart hub as the subject.
