Barn Cats

There are several pairs of feral barn cats here on Thetis Island doing yeoman’s work keeping our burgeoning rat population down.   They are neutered, and have been adopted from cat rescue organizations on Van. island.   They belong here.   If you have feral cats in your neighbourhood consider they may be working and on the job...they have a range around their home base, circulating throughout an area, catching rodents for food and heading home for kibble or moving to an adjacent hunting ground once they have cleared out your property.

So...if you trap what appears to be a feral cat, please check with Emily McIvor, Carol Swann or Jesse McLeod to make sure it isn’t a working barn cat.  They would be happy to know where their felines are working and bring them home.   Please do not assume they came from Penelakut Island and do not release them there.

The Cat Came Back!

Our superb hunter of mice and rats has been missing from the Hollyberry Lane area for almost a week now.  Tommie is a brownish-greyish tabby with scarring on one ear.

We are hoping he's just up a tree somewhere and will turn up on the doorstep as if nothing has happened.

If you have seen him, please let us know - puzzlnut@telus.net

Forbes Hall Community Centre ~ The Month of December

Forbes Hall Community Centre has bustled with activity during the month of December.

The following activities or events took place:

As part of December 4th’s All Around the Island Christmas Market Tour, vendors were selling from the spacious Assembly Hall, and the luncheon was very successful and well-attended.

Soup’s On was served on three Wednesdays this past month, yum!

Early morning Fitness happens every weekday, with early risers getting their heart rate up before they start their days.

The Knitting Bee is held on Fridays, and many projects were started and completed this past month, also lots of conversation, cups of tea and cookies.

Tai Chi, led by Carol Sowerby, welcomed new-comers and regulars.

Church has been meeting each Sunday, with guest speakers joining remotely on the big screen.

On Monday evenings the Serenity Group meets in the Library.

Yoga, led by Karen Roff, has many new participants, and a portion of all donations go directly towards Forbes Hall Community Centre’s Expansion costs.  Thank you!

Scottish Country Dancing – has had a couple of afternoons of getting back into the dances with some new participants.

There were many meetings of the various island organizations – thank you for the work you do!

The Library was open and hosted by the helpful Friends of the Library. Tea and goodies are served on Sundays.

This year’s Community Christmas Concert was organized again by Simone Luckham – a small but cheerful group gathered to sing, be entertained, and enjoy Christmas treats – great camaraderie!  Attendees were greeted by Carolers and fiddler, Wayne Loiselle, as they arrived at the Hall.

Wishing everyone the joys of the season,

Ellen, Don, Teresa, and Ann

Booking Time Slots for your COVID Shots January 11th

Whatever you may have been told when you've tried to book your time slot for a COVID booster or earlier shot in January, the clinic is indeed an "All Ages" whole-community clinic and you can certainly at least start trying to get your time assigned.  Some people under 65 years old have
now got in, and some others have had trouble, so it's probably a matter of persistence.  The system is not adapting quickly. For details about the types of vaccines for different age groups, and
about the whole-community approach in general, you can go to
https://www.thetisislandfire.ca/ftp/Whole_Community_schedule-Jan2022-FINAL.pdf where we have posted the latest information we were sent by Island Health on December 20th.

If you are still being turned away by New Year's, please let us know and we'll try at our end, but given the letter from Island Health, we do expect the problems to be ironed out.  And we will, of course, keep posting any new information as we get it.

A Kind Christmas Gesture

We have a fellow Islander who is down on his luck and could use a helping hand. He is presently living in his broken-down truck.

A moral boost would be to have his truck repaired and subsequently find him a warm bed for a few months.

I will donate $100 to help.

If you have a similar Christmas spirit, me a commitment and I'll add it all up to see what will work for him. Once we have an amount and a plan, I'll contact you for your approval to collect your donation.

Cheers

Looking for Accommodation

Hello Everyone!

I’m looking for accommodation on Thetis starting Feb 1, 2022.  I will be working for BC Ferries and would need this to be a full time rental, long term.

I’m looking for a little cabin, separate suite etc. I would like to have wifi and laundry. I also would like it to be pet friendly as I have a little cat who may accompany me from time to time, (not always).

I would love to hear from you if you have a place.

Phone Scams

This is the season to be wary…phone scams abound.  Even the fire department gets calls that we are about to be arrested by the Canadian Border Services for an illegal package, or from a credit card company saying that a suspicious purchase was just made on our credit card account.

Both of these are phone scams.  Do not press 1 for more information.  Just hang up.

If you are worried your credit card might have been compromised, phone the Customer Service number on the back of your credit card and ask if there is a problem.

The Thetis Clinic is Online Now!

They are still limiting booking a time slot to those 65 or older, but this is a systemic issue - we'll continue to update you as we can get the recognition of ours as a "whole community clinic" fully plugged into the booking system.  But if you are 65 or older, and have received an email or letter from the BC Ministry of Health, with a link to go to, you can now book online for the clinic here on Thetis on January 11th. If  you are 65 but haven't received that communication, you can still book by phone at 1-833-838-2323.  If you try but run into difficulties, please email us at covidclinic@thetisislandfire.ca

Thank you to Marlee Loiselle for being the first to break through and
let us know!
