Flu Shot Clinic Reminder

The FLU SHOT Clinic on Tuesday, November 9, from 10-2 pm will be Drop-In, so bring your BC Health Care Card with you.

If you haven’t already let us know at fluclinic@thetisislandfire.ca that you will be dropping in for your flu shot, please email us by Friday so that we can inform the VIHA nurses of the number of flu vials needed, including any children.  Children 6 months or older can get a flu shot.  There will be a limited amount of Flu Mist available for children instead of the shot.

Masks must be worn.  The TIVFD Auxiliary volunteers will be offering Pot of Gold Coffee and snacks for your enjoyment while you wait out the required 15 minutes after your vaccination.  The coffee service is supported by the Thetis Island Community Fund.

COVID VACCINATION UPDATE for the Forbes Hall Clinic

YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER WITH IMMUNIZE BC before coming to the Forbes Hall clinic for a Covid vaccination, including (if you are eligible) the booster shot.  Telling us you want the shot is not the same as
registering.  You can register by phone, toll free at 1-833-838-2323.

The nurses are not bringing an administrator with them, so you must be pre-registered and get an appointment time for your Covid shot.  Tell the registrar you will be attending on Thetis Island, Forbes Hall Community Centre on November 9th.

If you are from out of province and want a first or second covid vaccination, phone the BC Service Centre first, in Duncan at 240-746-1400, and tell them you want a Temporary Health ID Card so that you can then register for your 1st or 2nd covid vaccination afterwards by phoning Immunize BC with your new Temporary Health Card number.

3rd Covid (Booster) Shot Details:

ANYONE who had their LAST (2nd) SHOT SIX MONTHS AGO (2nd Covid vaccination before April 8, 2021) can phone 1-833-838-2323 and request to register for a 3rd Covid (Booster) shot.  You will receive Pfizer vaccine.

The 6 month time lag does not apply if you have your letter in hand from your doctor saying you are eligible for a covid booster, so in this case please call 1-833-838-2323 to register and get an appointment time. It is possible that this applies to anyone over 80, as well.  Phone to register and they will clarify this.  This group will receive the Moderna vaccine.

There will NOT be Covid drop-in vaccinations.  The nurses will bring only enough Pfizer and Moderna for those who have preregistered.

Summary:
For the flu shot, bring your health care number.  Did you let us know you were attending?

For a Covid shot, you must be preregistered through Immunize BC or you will be turned away to get your shot elsewhere. Even if you have told us you want a covid shot, you won’t get one unless you registered with Immunize BC prior to Nov. 9th.

The above info was supplied by the VIHA nurses on Wednesday afternoon.
Thanks.

Is the Jack o Lantern Fading?

Now that the carved pumpkins have served their purpose, but are still sitting by the front door of your home, perhaps it's time to repurpose them.

The piggies have feasted on fruit and vegetables all summer, but alas are now all gobbled up.  Time to sweeten up the hogs by offering them some sweet pumpkins.

You can drop off your carved pumpkins on your way to the post office or your next trip to the ferry lineup.

Drop it in the black tub next to the water Tote close to the road, where the pigs digs are.

Also any other fruit you may have decomposing, that you didn't have time to process, is appreciated.

Thank you, much appreciated.

Around the Island Christmas Tour: December 4th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

We’re having a Christmas Bazaar this year - but we're trying a different approach.  The bazaar will happen around the island at different spots with some spots hosting multiple vendors.  Closer to the date, we will be sending out a flyer with a map of Thetis and all participating properties will be marked on the map along with the names of those who will be at that spot.

Are you interested in taking part?  Contact Pat English by Thursday so we can get you on the map.  If you are unable to sell from your own home or join someone else, we may be able to find a location for you.

Watch for more information!

Community Composting System in the Works

Hello Thetis Islanders,
A couple of weeks ago, a small group representing ThINC, TIRRA, the Islands Trust, and Jollity Farm gathered to discuss the next steps for a community composting system here on Thetis Island.

During summer 2021, ThINC, in partnership with TIRRA, developed a report - The ROOT Report: Re-earthing Organics on Thetis, which examined the state of composting on Thetis, as well as the feasibility to start a community composting facility. The composting survey we disseminated demonstrated that community members were keen on seeing a community composting system - especially one that could take dairy and meat products. However, various regulations present obstacles and/or barriers to hosting a community composting facility. In summary, food waste collected from more than one source (e.g. two or more residences, commercial entities, etc) triggers Provincial, Regional, and Local regulations. On Thetis, a community composting system can take place only on land zoned S-2 (public utility), in which we have in short supply. Furthermore, any system must adhere to Provincial regulations: Organic Matter Recycling Regulation (OMRR), as well as Regional (CVRD) regulations - both which come at a cost.

That said, composting locally brings many important benefits. It reduces garbage hauling costs by diverting organics from the landfill (which currently comprise ~⅓ of all landfill waste). It decreases the need to import compost for local gardeners and farmers. Lastly, composting organic waste is exponentially better for the environment than letting it rot in landfills. In landfills, organic materials produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas, and leachate, a toxin hazardous to water systems. With this in mind, the ThINC-TIRRA-Islands Trust-Jollity Farm Partnership is committed to establishing a system here.

Based on findings from the ROOT Report, on October 21st, the Partnership explored Thetis Island’s options. Due to zoning restrictions, our intent is to start small at the existing waste/recycling Centre (zoned S-2) and expand the system as needed, working towards greater sustainability. These efforts will help achieve our goal of zero waste as laid out in Thetis Island’s Official Community Plan (TH-Bylaw No. 88 2011, consolidated 2017, pg. 26). Our first line of action is applying for OMRR and then getting the appropriate system financed and set up. The system will be financed based on projected user fees and grants or further research will be required.

To keep costs at a minimum, we will be looking into in-vessel composting units that can compost all sorts of food waste, as well as meat and dairy, but that are also rodent-proof! Such units are not ‘cheap’, but are considerably more economical than larger scale structures, and can be moved with ease if needed. Fingers and toes crossed, this system should be up and running by next summer.

For anyone interested in learning more about this project, or who may be keen to get involved, please get in touch with:
tirra@thetisisland.net.

Lastly, a big thanks to all who completed the community composting survey this summer. Your feedback was very valuable and appreciated, and has helped guide the direction of this project.
Thanks,
Charlotte
