Monday, November 10, 2025 at 9:35AM A big shout out to all those folks who came out Sunday morning to plant trees at the cemetery. It was a beautiful fall day enriched by the camaraderie of friends working together restoring native trees in St. Margaret’s Cemetery.
We have a wonderful community indeed.

Monday, November 10, 2025 at 9:31AM Remembrance Day is observed yearly as a statutory holiday to honour the sacrifices of those who served and died in the line of duty. It was originally known as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I at 11 am on November 11th, 1918.
Canadians observe silence at exactly the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to pay tribute to all veterans and to reflect on the human cost of conflict, ensuring that future generations remember the sacrifices made for peace and freedom.
The Thetis Island Volunteer Fire Department facilitates a Remembrance Day gathering at the flagpole at Forbes Hall with the lowering of the Canadian flag to half-mast, followed immediately at exactly 11:00 o’clock with the Two Minutes of Silence. The laying of a flower by individuals as an act of remembrance follows. We then move inside the hall for the reading of In Flanders’ Fields, a short video by the Canadian Legion, and to share stories of remembrances.
We will be gathering outside of Forbes Hall on Tuesday by 10:45 in order to have the flag lowered at 11:00.
The Duncan Flying Club, with antique aircraft, will endeavour to do a fly-past over us at approximately 10:50.
All are welcome to attend.
If there is a Veteran available to read the Act of Remembrance after the Silence, please make yourself known to one of the volunteer fire fighters before the ceremony.
Act of Remembrance:
They were young, as we were young.
They served, giving freely of themselves.
To them, we pledge, amid the winds of time,
To carry their torch, and never forget.
We will remember them.
(All answer: We will remember them.)

Sunday, November 9, 2025 at 8:16AM On November 9th, St. Margaret's Cemetery Committee will be holding a work party in parts of the old cemetery. This will include planting Gary Oak and other trees as part of the waterfront bank restoration.
We are looking for willing hands to help with the planting. Work will start at 10am and, depending on turnout, shouldn't take too long.
Any help is greatly appreciated, as many hands make light work.
We will have some tools, but if you can bring digging tools such as pickaxes and shovels, they are sure to come in handy.
We are thankful to the donation of trees by Ann Chin that makes this project possible.

Saturday, November 8, 2025 at 7:16AM Hello Nature Lovers & Mushroom Hunters,
A huge thank you to everyone who took part in the Fall Fungi & Lichen Bio-Blitz on Thetis Island! Together, we made 297 observations and identified over 100 different species - an amazing snapshot of the island’s fungal diversity. Every observation you shared contributes to community (citizen) science, helping researchers, conservationists, and naturalists better understand the ecosystems that make Thetis Island so unique.
Bio-Blitz Winners:
Most Observations: Alina Ensminger with an impressive 60 observations.
Coolest Find: Fruiting body of Usnea (Old Man’s Beard lichen) by klcoutside.
Best Photo: Deceiver mushroom by Athenia Willowbrook.
Link to blog post for a selection of photos (please note that ID is not 100%): https://www.thetisislandnatureconservancy.org/single-post/thank-you-for-making-the-fall-fungi-bio-blitz-a-success
Winners - please contact Charlotte at charlotte@thetisislandnatureconservancy.org to claim your prize!
And because we can’t get enough of mushrooms, here are 5 super cool fungi (and lichen) facts to celebrate the season:
1. Fungi are more closely related to animals than plants.
They share a common ancestor with animals, meaning that, biologically, we have more in common with mushrooms than with trees!
2. The largest living organism on Earth is a fungus.
A single Armillaria (honey fungus) in Oregon spans over 2,400 acres. It’s estimated to be thousands of years old and still growing underground.
3. Lichen isn’t just one organism.
It’s a partnership between a fungus and either an alga or a cyanobacterium. The fungus builds the “house,” providing structure and protection, while the alga or bacteria make the food through photosynthesis.
4. Some mushrooms glow in the dark.
Over 80 species of fungi are bioluminescent, producing their own eerie green light through a chemical reaction called luciferin oxidation.
5. Zombie fungi exist!
Certain species of Ophiocordyceps infect insects, controlling their behaviour and sprouting from their bodies to spread spores.
Thank you again for making this year’s Fall Fungi Bio-Blitz such a success.
Happy mushrooming,
Charlotte, Amellia, and the ThINC Team.
