Hul'qumi'num Language and Salish Art Class

November 21st, 2025: 11am to 2 pm Forbes Hall

It is common manners that when you go to a foreign country, you make an effort to learn how to say hello and a few simple phrases in the local dialect. The same standard applies to our local indigenous communities. Being able to greet people and say thank you' in the Hul'qumi'num language is an important way to show respect.

As a reconciliation component of this year's Health talk program, we are excited to host Philomena Williams and Stuart Pagaduan for a combined introductory Hul'qumi'num language and Coast Salish art class.

T’uwahwiye’ (Philomena Williams) is a respected Cowichan (Quw’utsun’) Elder from Coast Salish territory on Vancouver Island, B.C. A cultural knowledge keeper and protocol guide, she shares teachings with care—supporting Hul’q’umi’num’ language use, song, story, and the practices that uphold respect, relationship, and community wellness.

Stuart Pagaduan is an accomplished Coast Salish artist and educator. His works are on display in numerous galleries. His art class provides an introduction to Coast Salish Art and the traditions it celebrates.

Cost is $40 and includes a light lunch provided by Forbes Hall Food Services (if cost is a barrier, please reach out to me or any Health Group member)

Agenda:

11am: Group A - Language, Group B - art

Noon - Lunch

1pm - Group A - Art, Group B - language

(Each group will have a maximum of 15 people)

For any questions, or to reserve a spot, please contact davidreay@telus.net

New Times for Post Office

There have been a number of requests for the Post Office to extend its hours to 5:30 PM so people coming off the five o'clock ferry from work can pick up their mail during the week. We have got permission to do this, and the new hours are posted below.

Hours of operation:

Monday-Friday: 1000 AM to 0530 PM (closed 1200-1230 for lunch)

Saturday: 1030 AM to 0530 PM

Closed holidays

TDG Thursdays: Some TDG (Dangerous Goods) Thursdays we may be gone for about 20 minutes around 1100 to get the mail at the ferry to help the deliverer get back on the ferry.

Services

All regular postal services except bill payments and any type of money transfer. We do not have the resources to offer this service.

Red Drop Box and Post Office Boxes

Mail is sorted into the Post Office boxes between 0900 and 1000 AM each morning.
If you want your mail to go out on a given day have it in the red box before 0900 or bring it down to the Post Office before 1100 AM

EXCEPTION: Mail is picked up at 0900 AM on Friday, therefore it you wish your mail to go out Friday get it into the Post Office (NOT the red box) before 0530 PM Thursday

Mail and Parcels

According to regulations we are only supposed to keep mail and parcels for 2 weeks then we are to send it back. Obviously, we have not been doing that. If you are going to be away longer than 2 weeks, please let us know length of time so we can hold your mail. Depending on the length of time there could be a fee charged for parcels.

Please bring parcel tags to facilitate retrieving your parcels.

If you choose to put your on-island letters in the drop box, please advise the people you are leaving them for that they are there. If you want the post office to distribute your on-island letters, put them in the red mailbox. The Post office will NOT be checking the drop box. We take no responsibility for the use of the drop box.

Remembrance Day Gathering November 11, 11:00 am Sharp

The TIVFD will be facilitating the Remembrance Day Gathering at Forbes Hall again this year. There will be the lowering of the Canadian Flag, the Standing Silence and the laying of flowers at the flagpole outside, and a short gathering in the hall afterwards. The outside ceremony will start at 11am sharp.

The Duncan Flying Club has agreed to once again fly over Forbes Hall in their iconic antique aircraft. As these aeroplanes are slow, and they have a flight path to follow over Ladysmith, Thetis, Chemainus, Duncan and Cobble Hill with a time over Duncan of 11:02. This means their planned timing requires them to be over Thetis well before 11am.

Last year it was around 10:50 that they flew over us.

Ride Needed to Nanaimo

Hello Friends. I was wondering if anyone is going to Nanaimo.
I need to take my 6hp 4 stroke engine to Dreamers Marine for them to take a look at under warranty as I’m having engine issues and need to get it looked at ASAP so I can move my sailboat back to Thetis Island.

Please send me a msg or call or text me on my best friend cell:
250-436-0112

(I can't go Tuesday but any other day would work. I would have to go to my sailboat at kinsmen beach in Chemainus and unlock it and take it off my sailboat.)

Thanks in advance!

 Jasmine
